BRUSSELS EXPORT’S WORD
Brussels-Shanghai: ARCHITopia
Architecture & Urbanism
Brussels, 8-13/04/2007
With its rapidly increasing urban development, China’s architectural and construction markets are blessed with unprecedented opportunities. It is estimated today that about 40% of the world’s construction materials are consumed in China every year!
During the past two decades, impressive buildings have been completed, namely the new airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the National Grand Theater, the Olympic Stadium, the new CCTV building, as well as the upcoming high-end projects for Shanghai Expo 2010. These constructions have witnessed the wisdom and the perseverance of a Sino-foreign alliance and there is no doubt that the western counterparts have contributed a lot to the domestic architecture industry by bringing in brilliant ideas, new designing concepts and remarkable technologies.
Shanghai-Brussels ArchiTopia Forum organized by Brussels Export is held in such a golden time. Last year it achieved great success in Shanghai and received over 2500 visitors. This time, the young architects from China, generally known as “the fourth generation”, decide to fly to the heart of Europe, aiming to exhibit the works and to reveal the mind.
The ten delegates are all aged from 35 to 45, mostly having overseas educational background. Chief architects of the design institutes, university professors and privately-owned studio partners, their works set foot in commercial office buildings, campus construction, gardens and other urban planning projects in Shanghai and its neighboring cities.
The delegation’s presence in Belgium is a unique chance for the Brussels architects. It is an important step for a better understanding and access of the growing Chinese market and its operational style. It is also an exceptional and unprecedented professional matchmaking opportunity.
